Character Summary

Scalorus Gatorus, also known as “Carnivore,” made his first-ever appearance in Book 42, when he faked a cry for help and lured new White Battler Richard Montgomery all the way into an alley he was hiding in. As soon as Richard found him, he knocked out the boy and kidnapped him. Continuously calling him “murderer,” he took him to the ruins of Big Jaw Palace, which he magically rebuilt himself. He locked Richard in a cage in the throne room, where he crowned himself the new king of Gatora. He then told his captive a story of his past. In telling it, he revealed that he was the younger brother of Reptilius “Predator” Gatorus. He’d been banished from Gatora for trying to overthrow his older brother and, months after his death, was back to seek revenge on his killer — the White Battler. But just as he was about to eat Richard, he learned the shocking truth — Richard was a White Battler, but not the White Battler. Not the one he was looking for. No, that was Jamison “J.J.” Rountree, who’d since left town and moved to Los Angeles, California.

Just as Carnivore was deciding what he should do, he was knocked by Chompus Crocous, crown prince of the Crocoans, who rescued Richard and safely took him to meet his brother, Reptilius “Stalker” Crocous, the king of the Crocoans, his wife, Queen Bitena, their biological son, Crown Prince Gnawbin, and their adoptive son, Prince Fangorus. But Carnivore decided, despite losing Richard, that he wasn’t done with him yet.

The next day, during round two of the Tournament of Wonder, Carnivore interrupted Richard’s battle and kidnapped him on the spot. When new Orange Battler James “Jay” Dixon tried to save him, Carnivore kidnapped him, too. He took them back to his palace, telling them that although he was wrong about which White Battler he’d targeted, he was going to eat Richard anyway. And, for good measure, he was going to eat Jay, too. Unfortunately, the two boys outsmarter Carnivore and escaped his grasp. He caught up to and cornered them, but they ended up falling into a maze, through which he chased his prey. He managed to catch them when they got snatched up in a net at the end of the maze.

He tried to eat Jay, but he got free and ran, while Richard was forced to stay behind and fight Carnivore. He quickly found himself losing to Richard, at first, but when his Battler Crystal powered down on him, leaving him powerless, Carnivore got the upper leg and effortlessly beat him down. Just as he was about to eat his prey, Richard put him on the spot with a shocking question: Why did he want revenge on a brother whom he had betrayed? Carnivore’s answer was that he still did love his brother and had wanted to make things right with him. But when he’d heard that he’d been killed, he felt awful knowing he’d never get that chance. But he could still make amends by devouring both the original White Battler and the successor to the role. With that, he snatched up Richard in his jaws and swallowed him whole. Unfortunately for him, Richard escaped when his Battler Crystal went through the Crystal Advance and became a Battler Emerald. He used a water spell to get Carnivore to throw him up.

Another battle ensued, this time with Richard using Steeltooth, his uncooperative alligator. He laughed at how horrible of a master Richard was to Steeltooth and, as soon as they’d cleared the air with each other, tried to kill Steeltooth with one of his spells. But Richard took the hit dead-on, protecting his alligator. Right then and there, Steeltooth gave Richard his full respect, which was bad news for Carnivore. He was completely overwhelmed by the new water spells Richard and Steeltooth had learned. He lost the battle in no time flat.

Carnivore was knocked unconscious for a few minutes, but when he came to, he saw that the other Battlers (minus Blue Battler Shauna Davidson and Purple Battler Diahandra Christian) had arrived. Jay had led them to Richard from the throne room. The hungry gator king decided to eat all of them, as well as Richard and cast a spell to kill them. But Deyon knocked him out by reflecting one of his spells off his sword. As he flew through several walls, he vowed to get the Battlers. “Especially the white one!” he added.

In the epilogue, Carnivore paid a visit to the creature who’d tipped him off as to Richard’s location: Chief Manhunter. He thanked him for giving him another reason to live (now that he had none since his brother died before he got to make amends with him). With Richard still alive and breathing, Carnivore was now making it his life’s mission to defeat and permanently devour him. Of course, unbeknownst to him, Chief Manhunter was reading his mind during his entire visit, learning what’d happened between him and Richard. Carnivore had unwittingly been working for Chief Manhunter (and his cohort, Cast) in some way, but in what way?

That question was answered when Carnivore returned in Book 48. With it now being no secret he worked for Chief Manhunter, he snuck into the DiCapa mansion disguised as an oversized present and kidnapped Deyon, Richard, and Diahandra easily. He brought them to the Killer Beaver Village, where he intended to witness Chief Manhunter finally eat them and absorb their Battler Emeralds (by now, all eight Battlers had gone through the Crystal Advance). But things went wrong when Goril Primus was alerted to the fact that he was being used by Chief Manhunter. Angered, he busted up the whole dinner, allowing the Battlers to escape. Their escape was guaranteed, though, when Deyon successfully used his Magic Advance spell on him, Goril, Fenrir Lupus, and Maximole Diglon. Since his defeat at Deyon’s hands, Carnivore hasn’t been seen since.
