Character Summary

Derrick Christian is the younger, high-spirited brother of Diahandra Christian, the Purple Battler. He’s also a comedy-relief-type character. He was first seen in Book 15, when Shauna and Diahandra were preparing to leave on their Battler journey. On the first day of their journey, he rescued them from a hungry Chief Manhunter. After getting permission from his mother, he was allowed to go with Shauna and Diahandra on their journey.

While on the road, he and the girls met Jamal O’Connor, a water magic user from Woodbridge. He joined their party, as well, after having a quick battle with Shauna.

While fighting in the Magic Battle Arena of Quantico, Derrick and his party defeated the Sabre Brothers, Striker and Killer, and thus made enemies out of them. The next time they met them was in Dumfries, when they tried to capture them by freezing them using a Freezooka (a bazooka that freezes anything it shoots). They met them a third time in Manassas when they tried to use the Freezooka again on everybody in the Manassas Magic Battle Arena. Their most recent encounter was in Richmond, when they tried to kidnap every child in town and eat them. Derrick was kidnapped by them when they figured out they were behind it.

While still in Richmond, Derrick and friends made the acquaintance of Felicia Hooper, a budding fire magic user, who also joined their group. On the way to Chicago, they met a new enemy named Ursa Infernus and his associate, Teddy Volcanis, two mutant bears who are masters of using fire magic and have big appetites for humans. They met them again in Chicago three months later when they attacked the Chicago MBA.

In Book 30, Derrick and the others arrived in Denver to face their next challenge at the MBA there. But no sooner did they get there did they have to solve the mystery of a heat wave that’d lasted for days there. The perpetrators turned out to be the Sabre Brothers, who stole a weather machine from the city’s MBA to make the heat wave. Pablo Peak, the MTC of the Denver MBA, helped Derrick and the others solve the case and retrieve the weather machine. They earned their Agro Orbs after defeating Pablo a month later.

After arriving in Seattle, Derrick, Shauna, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia found themselves meeting up with Dominic Carter, leader of the evil MEF — Men Eradicating Freaks. The group specializes in exterminating BMPs — Bearers of Magic Powers because to some people, they’re seen as freaks. After rescuing Marina Rivers, the MTC of Seattle’s MBA, they went to the MBA for their BOP — Battle of Powers. Although Derrick and Diahandra were defeated by her, Shauna managed to use one of her attacks against her and defeat her. But before they could get their orbs, MEF attacked the MBA and took all who were there hostage except Shauna and Marina. Derrick and the others were going to be shot in an alley, but Shauna rescued them and they all defeated Carter in a five-on-one showdown. During the showdown, though, Jamal got shot by Carter, thanks to Derrick using his animal transformation power to turn into a monkey and cover Carter’s face. Jamal barely survived the shot and was up and walking again in two weeks. The kids got their sixth orbs, the Torrent Orbs, as well.

In Book 31, Derrick helped Jamal and Felicia rescue Shauna and Diahandra when they were kidnapped by the Sabre Brothers, Infernus, and Volcanis, who were working together at the time. When they finally found them, he and Felicia ended up being taken prisoner, too. It took Jamal’s magic to save them all. And Derrick got to witness Jamal and Shauna’s official pairing after they admitted their long-awaited feelings for each other.

After getting to San Francisco around Christmas time, Derrick and the others defeated underground magic master Lenny Digg, MTC of the San Francisco MBA, and won their seventh orbs, the Subterra Orbs.

In Super Battlers 3, Derrick, Shauna, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia were magically transported from San Francisco to Dare Island, an island ruled by a sorcerer named Bin Dare, while celebrating New Year’s Eve. He reunited with the six male Battlers — Deyon Davis, Maurice Eazel, J.J. Rountree, Kesse Eazel, Aaron Rountree, and newcomer Jon Crawley. Then, Dare revealed that they’d been brought to his island to participate in a tournament against all of his ultimate enemies. If they won, they got to live. If they lost, they got eaten.

Dare separated everyone after that, putting Derrick with Shauna and Jamal. It wasn’t long before they encountered the Sabre Brothers, Shauna’s ultimate enemies, and battled them. Defeating them was easy since they’d been so easy to defeat before. Finding everyone else was harder, though. After learning from Maurice that Felicia had lost her fight with Fenrir Lupus and was eaten, and that Kesse had been defeated by his ultimate enemy, Chief Manhunter, and was also eaten, they reunited with the others and took down Dare in a short-but-deadly battle. Upon his defeat, Dare revealed that he’d brought them there just to entertain him, to which all the kids said that it was sick and wrong and that he could think of better ways to entertain himself. Then, they were all sent back to Alexandria, Virginia, to celebrate New Year’s with the boys for twenty-four hours before going back to San Francisco.

In Book 38, Derrick and the others arrived in Los Angeles. He heard about, but did not play much of a role in, the adventure involving Shauna’s kidnapping by evil elephant seal Quatic Ugong. He did play a role in the adventure after that one, though.

A few days after that incident, Derrick, Shauna, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia arrived at the Los Angeles MBA. They met Eartha Quaker, the MTC of the MBA, and learned that she was not only the most powerful MBA of all MBAs in the country, but she was also the most powerful mage in the country. She oversaw everything that went on in the nation as well as trained aspiring Earth mages to be their best. Derrick and the others challenged her to a BOP and she accepted. The next day, with many of the patrons of the MBA watching, Derrick, Shauna, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia battled Eartha for their final orb. But every time it seemed like they were getting the upper hand, a mysterious jewel Eartha was wearing would glow and she would suddenly unleash a powerful spell. The first time it happened, the team stayed intact. However, with each spell after that, one member of the party was knocked out at a time. Felicia and Jamal fell victim to Eartha’s spells and were eliminated from the fight in no time flat. Derrick followed after he found out that the jewel Eartha was wearing (her Bide Stone) was the cause for her powerful spells and tried to remove it from him while in a bird form — and got electrocuted in the process. But when he came to, he learned that Shauna and Diahandra had realized the same thing and had taken Eartha’s jewel from her and knocked her out to win the battle. The kids got their Terra Orbs and were now eligible to enter the Tournament of Wonder.

In Book 39, Derrick, Shauna, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia left Los Angeles behind and headed through a Nevada forest. There, he and the others watched as Diahandra battled and sealed her newest Battler Animal, a squirrel she later named Nut. Soon after sealing her, though, she and the others were captured by a group of squirrels called Killer Squirrels, who were led by a warrior named Niger. But a young man named Woody Lamina came in and saved them with his animal transformation magic just as the Killer Squirrels, who were angry about Diahandra’s capture, were about to eat them. Woody then took the group to his cottage and, after explaining about his life of protecting all travelers from the Killer Squirrels, was challenged by Derrick, who was enthralled by the fact that he was a user of animal transformation magic just like himself, to a battle of their animal transformation magic. Derrick ended up winning the battle (which was his first-ever win in a battle), and soon after Woody came to, Niger came along and kidnapped Woody.

Niger took Woody back to the Killer Squirrel Village, which was hidden in the trees, but Derrick and the others were right behind him. After discovering the location of the Killer Squirrels’ village, they found Woody tied up in the house of their chief. They released him and were about to leave the village when Chief Mankiller, the Killer Squirrels’ chief who evoked emotions similar to those of Chief Manhunter (patience, calmness, sternness, fierceness, and hunger), caught them and prepared to eat them. After Derrick and the others defeated most of the Killer Squirrels, the chief almost defeated them with a powerful Shadow Sphere spell. But thanks to a good move by Diahandra and Nut, Chief Mankiller’s own spell backfired on him and blew up the entire village, sending himself and Niger flying off in one direction and Derrick and his friends in the other. But Woody had officially been rescued, and as a way to say thank you, he gave his new friends a magic compass and sent them on their way.

After that adventure was over, Derrick, Shauna, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia finally returned to Virginia. But just as the traveling teens were about to say goodbye, Infernus and Volcanis showed up to attack them. But the teens defeated them in a quick, easy battle. Afterwards, the teens went their separate ways, Derrick, Shauna, and Diahandra heading back to Fort Belvoir. As soon as they got to Fort Belvoir, Shauna separated from Derrick and Diahandra and headed for her home. And just as Derrick and Diahandra arrived at their home, Derrick dropped a bombshell — after a lot of thought, he’d decided that it was time to just be a normal kid for awhile and stay out of Diahandra’s Battler life. He’d decided that although he still had his animal transformation magic, he’d be focusing only on finishing high school now.

Derrick and Diahandra reunited with their mother, and while they were catching up with her, Shauna came over to their house and invited Diahandra to join her in finding Deyon, Maurice, J.J., Kesse, Aaron, and Jon. Diahandra accepted her invitation and joined her. Derrick, meanwhile, was left alone with their mother and gladly caught her up on everything else that’d happened, just happy that he was home and was finally going to get the chance to be normal again.

Although Derrick didn’t appear in Book 40, he was mentioned by J.J. When Liam DiCapa’s men arrived at their house to kidnap Diahandra, Derrick leapt into the action, transforming into a wolf to try and stop them. But Derrick was shot and left for dead. He managed to heal himself by transforming back to his human form. In the process of doing that, though, Diahandra was still kidnapped.

In Book 46, Derrick returned to accompany Shauna and Diahandra to an HHRM — Hideaway Home for Runaway Mages — in Topeka, Kansas, along with Jamal and Felicia. It was there that they met Jeremy Frost, the son of the owners of the home. Although he seemed nice, at first (he saved them from a rough battle with the Sabre Brothers and treated them well), Derrick, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia started to suspect something was off about him when strange things started happening that almost resulted in Jamal’s death. Their fears were confirmed when they found out that Jeremy was obsessed with Shauna and was trying to kill Jamal so that he could have Shauna all to himself.

Upon finding this out, Derrick, Diahandra, Jamal, and Felicia were all frozen by Jeremy, who was fought by Shauna in a one-on-one battle that’d decide their fates. Things looked bleak for the teenagers, at first, when Shauna’s Battler Crystal powered down on her in the middle of the battle, but when it turned out that she was only undergoing the Crystal Advance and then transformed into her new, Battler-Emerald-powered form, she turned the tables on Jeremy and defeated him. Felicia alerted the police from Magicia, and they came and arrested Jeremy. After that, the five teenagers went back to Virginia.

Derrick had a secret no one knew about until the first meeting with the Sabre Brothers — he can turn into animals! This happened when he (off-page) ate a Candy of Power that gave him that ability. He can now turn into any animal he thinks of for as long as he wants. If he wants to turn into a different animal, he can go right to that form without returning to his human form. This has proven useful on many occasions, though he’s lost more battles than he’s won.
