Character Summary
Funguin Waddlesworth, a penguin fractured by evolution, first hit the scene in
Book 29, when he and his master, Polar Tundros, also known as “the
Gamester,” kidnapped Santa Claus from his workshop. They kidnapped the six
Battlers by filling Gold Battler Deyon Davis’s house with sleeping gas. They
were brought to their Palace of Fun, where it was revealed that White Battler
J.J. Rountree was afraid of penguins. They were also challenged to play games.
The Battlers refused, at first, but they changed their minds when they learned
they were holding Santa Claus prisoner.
As they played Gamester’s games, one Battler at a time was eliminated. Deyon
lost in his first game, Ride of Risk. Silver Battler Maurice Eazel lost in the
next game, Musical Despairs. No one lost in the third game, Burning in the
Rain. That struck a negative chord in Funguin’s master and made him start
cheating in the next few games. Funguin watched angrily as, in the fourth game,
Ice Cage, Gamester made J.J. fail to escape his cage in time after he’d
successfully managed to get out. Then, in the game following that, Rolling
Blunder, Orange Battler Keese Eazel lost when he originally rolled a number
(twelve) that would beat Gamester’s number (seven), but Gamester used his magic
behind his back to switch the dice to two. Finally, in the last game, Hide ’n’
Go Sizzle, while Green Battler Aaron Rountree and Red Battler Jon Crawley were
hiding, he peeked and saw where they hid, which helped him find Aaron, but not
Jon.
Gamester, with only Jon left, treated him to attend the Feast of the Champion.
Jon agreed to attend it, but that’s when Funguin decided to tell him that
Gamester had cheated to make sure he was the last Battler left. He’d been
cheating for years and Funguin was getting sick of it. After that, Gamester
decided to carry out his plans for Jon — making a meal out of him. There was a
motto in the Palace of Fun: “Strive to be the winner!” But Jon found out the second
part of it: “Become the Gamester’s dinner.” Gamester was about to eat Jon alive
when Funguin saved him and led him to a safe place to hide.
Funguin led Jon to the other Battlers, who’d been turned into game pieces. He
also released Santa Claus. Then, Jon challenged Gamester to a final challenge —
a winner-take-all challenge. If Jon won, Gamester had to release the other
Battlers and Santa. If Gamester won, Funguin was horrified to learn that he and
Jon would be eaten.
Fortunately for them, Jon beat Gamester in a deadly, lifelike game of rock,
paper, scissors. Gamester fell into a boiling-hot pot of water when he lost,
vowing he’d get revenge on Jon for beating him in his palace.
Funguin led the Battlers to safety after that and took up a job working with
Santa as his apprentice. He also let Jon have Gamester’s cat, Torch, whom Jon
sealed in his Battler Fire Club after that. Now, he’s a friend and ally of the
Battlers.
