Character Summary
Jamal O’Connor first entered Black Crystal Battlers in Book 15. He
appeared right after Shauna,
Diahandra, and Derrick left Woodbridge. The first
thing he did was challenge Shauna to a
BOP — a Battle of Powers. She
accepted and defeated him. Because of his loss, he decided to join her,
Diahandra, and Derrick on their
journey. As it turned out, he was a valuable asset because he could spot any
BMP — Bearer of Magic Powers — a mile away. Although Oriana didn’t accept him,
at first, she was convinced by Shauna,
Diahandra, and Derrick to let him
join.
The first adventure the rising water magic user had with the others was in the
same book, when they went up against Michael Hill at the Quantico MBA — Magic
Battle Arena — and won their first orb. Unfortunately, they also made two new
enemies — Striker and Killer Sabre.
In Book 22 (which contained what’d gone on during the boys’ adventures in Books
16–18), Jamal was kidnapped after a surprising ambush ended up with him getting
frozen in ice. The kidnappers were the Sabre Brothers. He was rescued by Shauna after Diahandra and Derrick
were also frozen later, but because he’d been frozen for so long, he needed to
be taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
After being released from the hospital, Jamal and the others continued on to
win an orb from Frostine Flake, the MTC — Magic Team Captain — of the Manassas
MBA.
Jamal and the others later did battle with Polara and Lionardo, Evilla’s two
Mutant Guerrillas who’d just resurfaced after being gone for so long. They
defeated them, but Derrick got
kidnapped by them after the fight was over. They had to let Shauna use a powerful ice spell she’d learned from
Frostine to beat them.
In Super Battlers 2, Jamal and the others arrived in Richmond and had to solve a mystery involving
high-ranking BMPs’ kids going missing. After finding out the Sabre Brothers
were behind it, they had to rescue Derrick
yet again when the Sabre Brothers kidnapped him.
In Book 23 (which contained what’d gone on during the boys’ adventures in Books
19–21), the traveling teens met Felicia Hooper, a young fire magic user, and
allowed her to join their team after battling in the Richmond MBA. After meeting
her, they also encountered and defeated Ursa
Infernus and Teddy Volcanis
on two separate occasions — outside of Richmond
and in Chicago
three months later.
In Book 30, Jamal
and the others arrived in Denver
to face their next challenge at the MBA there. But no sooner did they get there
did they have to solve the mystery of a heat wave that’d lasted for days there.
The perpetrators turned out to be the Sabre Brothers, who stole a weather
machine from the city’s MBA to make the heat wave. Pablo Peak,
the MTC of the Denver MBA, helped Jamal and the others solve the case and
retrieve the weather machine. They earned their Agro Orbs after defeating Pablo a month later.
After arriving in
Seattle, Jamal, Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia found themselves
meeting up with Dominic
Carter, leader of the evil MEF — Men Eradicating Freaks. The group
specializes in exterminating BMPs — Bearers of Magic Powers because to some people,
they’re seen as freaks. After rescuing Marina Rivers,
the MTC of Seattle’s MBA, they went to the MBA for their BOP — Battle of Powers. Although Derrick and Diahandra were defeated by her, Shauna managed to use one of her attacks against her
and defeat her. But before they could get their orbs, MEF attacked the MBA and
took all who were there hostage except Shauna
and Marina. Jamal and the others were
going to be shot in an alley, but Shauna
rescued them and they all defeated Carter
in a five-on-one showdown. During the showdown, though, Jamal got shot by Carter, thanks to Derrick
using his animal transformation power to turn into a monkey and cover Carter’s face. Jamal barely survived the shot and was
up and walking again in two weeks. The kids got their sixth orbs, the Torrent
Orbs, as well.
In Book 31, Jamal
was struggling with surfacing feelings for Shauna that were finally admitted to
Derrick and Felicia when they had to rescue Shauna and Diahandra from the Sabre
Brothers, Infernus, and Volcanis, who were working together at the time. When
they finally found them, Derrick and Felicia ended up being taken prisoner, too. It took
Jamal’s magic to save them all. And Jamal and Shauna’s
official pairing began after they admitted their long-awaited feelings for each
other.
After getting to San Francisco around
Christmas time, Jamal and the others defeated underground magic master Lenny Digg,
MTC of the San Francisco MBA, and won their seventh orbs, the Subterra Orbs.
In Super Battlers 3,
Jamal and the others were magically transported to Dare Island,
an island ruled by a sorcerer named Bin Dare, where he and Felicia met the six male Battlers for the first time.
Just after that, though, they all met up with the Battlers’ ultimate enemies.
This was because Dare was going to challenge them to a tournament in which
they’d fight their ultimate enemies in battles to the death. Winners got to
live, but losers got eaten — and there would be no chance to escape, because
Dare was shielding their stomachs with his magic.
Dare separated the
teenagers, putting Jamal with Shauna
and Derrick. Their enemies were the
Sabre Brothers. Defeating them was easy enough with Jamal’s water magic, Shauna’s ice magic, and Derrick’s
animal transformation magic. But after defeating them, they were shocked to
learn that Felicia had lost in her
fight against Silver Battler Maurice
Eazel’s ultimate enemy, Fenrir
Lupus, and had been eaten by him. But the pain of losing her was
short-lived when, while fighting Dare in the final battle, Felicia turned up again after using a laxative to get
out of Fenrir’s body. When Dare was defeated, he explained that they’d all been
brought to his island because he needed entertainment. Disgusted by his
intentions, the Battlers, Jamal, Felicia,
Derrick, Maurice’s
girlfriend, Vivian, and his and
Kesse’s little sister, Monique, were
all transported back home again, just in time to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
They’d be celebrating with them until midnight
of January 2.
In Book 38, Jamal
arrived in Los Angeles
with Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia.
While swimming in the ocean (after the group decided to relax for the day), he
saw Shauna get kidnapped by an
enormous elephant seal named Quatic
Ugong. Jamal gave chase and tried
to rescue her, but Quatic managed to outsmart him and take Shauna to his
underwater cave, where he planned to eat her and absorb her ice magic. This was
because he’d obtained the power to absorb magic from another user by eating
that user by eating a mysterious stone he found one day when he was still a
normal seal. Since then, he’d racked up sixteen different elements of magic by
eating mages of those elements — Earth, underground, water, mountain, wind,
fire, forest, destruction, revival, solar, lunar, shadow, light, curative,
poison, and celestial. And he wanted to add ice to his arsenal.
Shauna initially refused, but that changed after
Jamal was captured and his life was threatened. To save Jamal’s life, Shauna surrendered and let Quatic swallowed her
whole. But just before Shauna’s ice
magic could be absorbed, Jamal broke free of his captor and rescued his
girlfriend by breaking a gem that’d appeared on Quatic’s belly after he’d eaten
her. With her strength and will to fight renewed, Shauna
froze a few seals in Quatic’s seal army and threatened to break the ice and them if he didn’t let them go.
Reluctantly, Quatic agreed, and Jamal and Shauna
were released. But they knew they might see him again.
A few days after
that incident, Jamal, Shauna,
Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia arrived at the Los Angeles MBA. They met
Eartha Quaker, the MTC of the MBA, and an excited Jamal and Felicia informed the others that she was not only the
most powerful MBA of all MBAs in the
country, but she was also the most powerful mage
in the country. She oversaw everything that went on in the nation as well as trained
aspiring Earth mages to be their best. Felicia
and her friends challenged her to a BOP
and she accepted. The next day, with many of the patrons of the MBA watching,
Jamal, Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia
battled Eartha for their final orb. But every time it seemed like they were
getting the upper hand, a mysterious jewel Eartha was wearing would glow and
she would suddenly unleash a powerful spell. The first time it happened, the
team stayed intact. However, with each spell after that, one member of the
party was knocked out at a time. Felicia
was the first of their party to fall victim to one of Eartha’s spells and get
eliminated from the fight. Jamal followed her, and Derrick
was close behind him. When Jamal came to after the fight was over, he learned
that Eartha could only attack when her jewel (which they later learned was
called a Bide Stone) glowed. Shauna
and Diahandra had made note of that and had quickly taken it from her and
knocked her out to win the battle. The kids got their Terra Orbs and were now
eligible to enter the Tournament of Wonder.
In Book 39, Jamal, Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick,
and Felicia left Los
Angeles behind and headed through a Nevada forest. There, Jamal and the others
watched as Diahandra battled and sealed her newest Battler Animal, a squirrel
she later named Nut. Soon after sealing her, though, she and the others were
captured by a group of squirrels called Killer Squirrels, who were led by a
warrior named Niger.
But a young man named Woody Lamina came in and saved them with his animal
transformation magic just as the Killer Squirrels, who were angry about
Diahandra’s capture, were about to eat them. Woody
then took the group to his cottage and, after explaining about his life of
protecting all travelers from the Killer Squirrels, was challenged by Derrick to a battle of their animal transformation
magic. Derrick ended up winning the
battle (which was his first-ever win in a battle), and soon after Woody came to, Niger came along and kidnapped Woody.
Niger took Woody
back to the Killer
Squirrel Village,
which was hidden in the trees, but Jamal and the others were right behind him.
After discovering the location of the Killer Squirrels’ village, they found Woody tied up in the house of their chief. They
released him and were about to leave the village when Chief
Mankiller, the Killer Squirrels’ chief who evoked emotions similar to those
of Chief
Manhunter (patience, calmness, sternness, fierceness, and hunger), caught
them and prepared to eat them. After Jamal and the others defeated most of the
Killer Squirrels, the chief almost defeated them with a powerful Shadow Sphere
spell. But thanks to a good move by Diahandra and Nut, Chief Mankiller’s own spell
backfired on him and blew up the entire village, sending himself and Niger flying
off in one direction and Jamal and his friends in the other. But Woody had officially been rescued, and as a way to
say thank you, he gave his new friends a magic compass and sent them on their
way.
After that adventure
was over, Jamal, Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia
finally returned to Virginia. But just as the
traveling teens were about to say goodbye, Infernus and Volcanis showed up to
attack them. But the teens defeated them in a quick, easy battle. Afterwards,
the teens went their separate ways, Jamal heading back to his home in Woodbridge (where their
bus had arrived). And with that, Shauna,
Diahandra, and Derrick said goodbye to
the aspriring water mage. At least for now.
In Book 46, Jamal returned
to accompany Shauna and Diahandra to an HHRM — Hideaway Home for Runaway Mages —
in Topeka, Kansas, along with Derrick and Felicia. It was there that they met Jeremy
Frost, the son of the owners of the home. Although he seemed nice, at first
(he saved them from a rough battle with the Sabre Brothers and treated them well),
Jamal, Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia started to suspect something was off about
him when strange things started happening that almost resulted in Jamal’s
death. Their fears were confirmed when they found out that Jeremy was obsessed with
Shauna and was trying to kill Jamal so that he could have Shauna all to himself.
Upon finding this out,
Jamal, Diahandra, Derrick, and Felicia were all frozen by Jeremy, who was fought
by Shauna in a one-on-one battle that’d decide their fates.
Things looked bleak for the teenagers, at first, when Shauna’s Battler Crystal powered
down on her in the middle of the battle, but when it turned out that she was only
undergoing the Crystal Advance and then transformed into her new, Battler-Emerald-powered
form, she turned the tables on Jeremy and defeated him. Felicia alerted the police
from Magicia, and they came and arrested Jeremy. After that, the five teenagers
went back to Virginia.
In Book 54, Jamal had
good news for Shauna. He’d applied to be an MTC and been given the job. At first,
Shauna was happy for him, but when he mentioned that the MBA he’d been accepted
to was in Seattle, Washington, she wasn’t anymore. She was upset
that Jamal had made such a big move without at least letting her know so they could
prepare to have a long-distance relationship, and she broke up with him. However,
after making his case to her and apologizing for keeping her in the dark, Shauna
realized she still loved Jamal and decided to take him back. Good thing, too, because
she’d been seeing a boy named Ty Butler
during their time apart, but he turned out to be an evil creature called an Intimato,
a pantherlike creature that eats humans he or she is physically intimate with, in
disguise. Luckily, Shauna fought and killed the Intimato, and she and Jamal made
up and resumed their relationship.
Jamal fights with a sword and a shield. When he really needs to, he uses the
powers of the Greek god Poseidon to transform
himself into his alter-ego, Aquarius. When necessary, he also battles with his
Magic Animal, Aqua, a large, brown walrus that’s more
agile than any walrus known to man.
