Character Summary
Juliet Kwarteng was first seen walking down a
quiet street in Book 28. Immediately, she was attacked by Liam DiCapa’s
newest killing machine, Goril Primus. She was forced to work with him to hunt
down Aaron Rountree, the Green Battler, in exchange
for not getting eaten by him on the spot. Reluctantly, she agreed with his
terms and started working for him.
Aaron became suspicious of her when he
saw her hiding in an alley that Goril attacked him in. It was near the scene of
a girl named Celeste
Bea’s murder. Eager to find out if
she was working for Goril, he invited her over for dinner and, after nearly
kissing her, he got the answer out of her — she was working for Goril to
help him get his paws on Aaron. But
she wanted to protect Aaron because
she was really a part-time UNITY agent. After explaining the situation to Aaron, his older brother, J.J.,
was kidnapped by Goril because Juliet
was given his identity after the Battlers started working for UNITY (all
part-time agents were granted one identity).
Juliet and Aaron
hurried to save J.J., who was being
held with the other Battlers and Vivian
DiCapa in an old elevator in a building marked for demolition. There, Juliet witnessed Aaron
have a showdown with Goril. When it looked like Goril was going to finish Aaron off, Juliet
shot Goril in the arm, which made Goril realize she was betraying him out of
her newly-found love for Aaron. So he
decided to make her suffer for betraying him, which he nearly did. He chased
the two of them a long way and was about to devour Juliet
alive. But Aaron pushed her out of the
way and was eaten in her place. He escaped and she thanked him with a kiss for
saving her, and she gave him a second one after he accepted her thanks.
Their newly-entered relationship ended just seconds later when Goril snuck up
on them and caught Juliet in his
mouth. He swallowed her alive and whole, which killed her instantly — his
stomach acids are made out of sulfuric acid instead of hydrochloric
acid. Seeing Aaron in emotional pain
over the loss of his newfound love, Goril ran off and left Aaron in tears.
As it turned out, Aaron had no reason to be in tears. Juliet survived being eaten by Goril. Apparently, Chief Marshall Anderson
had given her a watch that had a unique feature on it — the ability to cover
the wearer’s body with a protective layer of metal when a single button was
pressed. The metal shielded Juliet
against Goril’s stomach acids and she rode through his system for three days
before she was excreted in the middle of a forest. After finding her way out of
the forest, she contacted Chief Anderson
at UNITY and some agents came and picked her up. She was personally taken to a
safe house by Chief Anderson
and was ordered to stay there until Goril had been caught.
Juliet disobeyed her orders, however, when she
found out that Goril was after Aaron
again. When Aaron was kidnapped by Goril and taken to an abandoned animal
shelter in Book 36, she sprang into action. She rescued him from Goril,
revealed to Aaron that she was alive,
told her whole story to him, and assisted him on a mission to rescue J.J., who’d been kidnapped by DiCapa days before.
Juliet accompanied Aaron,
Deyon, Jon, Shauna,
and Diahandra, who’d just returned to town, to the DiCapa mansion, where J.J. was being held. But J.J.
had been moved to DiCapa’s yacht in the Woodbridge Harbor.
On their way there, Goril ambushed them all, ate Deyon, Jon,
Shauna, and Diahandra, and tried to
eat Aaron next. But Juliet, after calling Chief
Anderson for backup, revealed
herself to Goril. His focus was immediately shifted to her. He chased her,
ready to devour her a second time when he caught her, but Aaron
distracted with a clever jump off the back of Falco, his giant peregrine
falcon, and covered his face, leaving Juliet
with enough time to escape.
Juliet waited for Chief Anderson and several other UNITY agents to
arrive and then assisted them in rescuing the other Battlers and arresting
Goril. After Goril’s capture, he was locked in the prison ward at UNITY
headquarters, where he vowed that he’d soon make his mistake and come after Juliet and Aaron
again. They would be his next meal, he promised them. Juliet has enjoyed her newly-rekindled relationship
with Aaron ever since.
After Aaron’s poisoning at the end of Book 36, Juliet was there to hear how badly he’d been poisoned
and to console him over it in the early chapters of Book 37. She then went home
(off-page) to reunite with the family who’d thought for months that she was
dead.
Juliet turned up in Book 43, when Jay became the first of the Battlers to be eliminated
from the Tournament of Wonder when Avio Swan, a nonhuman mage, defeated him in
the first battle of the third round. To make matters worse, he encountered
Bully Frog for the first time and lost a battle to him. Jay’s
confidence suffered, in large part because not once had he lost a one-on-one
battle before either of those battles. Richard
was there to comfort him, saying it was just a sign that there was still room
for improvement. The feelings of comfort were short-lived, though, as a giant,
carnivorous mole named Maximole
Diglon showed up and kidnapped Richard
and dragged him underground. Things got even worse for Juliet,
Aaron, Maurice,
Jay, and Jon
when a bunch of moles popped up out of the ground and kidnapped all of them.
Before they knew it,
they were in a village hidden underground. The village, called Moleville, was
led by a mole named Tunlen
Molen and his clumsy sister, Burra.
Tunlen explained that they’d been regular moles until drinking from a pond
that’d been hit by a blast of magical energy. Then, they all began developing
magic abilities and the ability to speak and walk on two legs. Tunlen then
expressly asked for Juliet and the
Battlers’ help in defeating Maximole, who’d transformed into the monster he was
by taking repeated trips to the pond and eventually gaining carnivorous
tendecies. The Battlers agreed, just as Maximole attacked the village. Maurice, Aaron,
and Jon were taken out fairly fast
during the resulting battle, but Jay
held on as he tried to defeat Maximole. He had the advantage until Maximole
suddenly took it from him and easily beat him. Before he could eat him, Juliet used her fighting skills learned in UNITY to
save him just in time, kicking him hard and driving him right out of the
village. But Jay’s confidence was further depleted from losing his third battle
in a row, as well as feeling like he’d let Richard down since he’d been unable
to rescue him thus far.
When Jay went off with Burra to save Richard
from Maximole, Juliet, Aaron, Maurice,
Jon, and Tunlen followed in Maurice’s Underground Fighter, showing up just after Jay had defeated Maximole. Maurice
threatened to kill Maximole if he didn’t release Richard,
leave, and stay away from Moleville. Reluctantly, Maximole ran off into the
tunnels, and that was that. With Maximole defeated and driven off, Moleville
saved, and Jay’s confidence restored, Juliet and the Battlers returned to the surface to
catch Deyon’s battle in round three of the tournament, happy that their
underground adventure was over.
In Book 44, Aaron surprised Juliet
with a dinner that he’d prepared for her. They really enjoyed it, at first, but
then, Juliet suddenly asked Aaron to meet her family. Just as he was about to say
yes to her, something bad happened — they found out Goril had escaped from
UNITY and had returned to capture Aaron. Worse yet, Fenrir
Lupus, Maurice’s ultimate enemy, had also returned and was looking to make
feast on Maurice, who was in the park with Vivian at the time. At Maurice and Aaron’s
orders, Juliet got Vivian out of the park and let the boys fight it out
with their ultimate enemies.
After Aaron survived the battle against Goril, and then
another battle the next evening (this one with Goril and his now-friend, Fenrir), he met Juliet
at her house and met her family. Juliet’s
mother and father were very accepting of Aaron
and thought he was the perfect choice for her. But her brother, William, didn’t like him at all.
Aaron relayed to Juliet
a threat William had given him — if he
didn’t back off Juliet, he’d take
action against him. Eager to make her brother see that Aaron
wasn’t a bad kid, Juliet called her
parents to talk to her brother. William
called Aaron up to the park a short
while later and he asked him to bring Maurice
with him. So Aaron went up to the park
near his house with Maurice, Vivian, and Juliet.
Unfortunately, it turned out that William was actually working for Fenrir and
Goril in hopes of getting Aaron away from Juliet, and it was revealed almost
immediately after Juliet talked to her brother. But it was too late to do
anything about it — Fenrir and Goril (who were now known as the Power Pair) had
kidnapped Aaron while Juliet, Maurice,
and Vivian weren’t looking. Maurice quickly followed when he was kidnapped in Juliet and Vivian’s
sight.
Juliet instantly put her UNITY agent skills to use,
tracking Maurice and Aaron down using the chips in their necks. Then,
after calling Jon to help out, she and
Vivian followed the signal to a cave
in a forest outside of Alexandria.
She went in without Vivian and found
Fenrir’s room — and witnessed him eating Maurice
alive. She saw that Fenrir had stripped Maurice
of his Battler Emerald and Aaron of
his Battler Crystal, though, so she swiped both of them as soon as Fenrir left
his room. She followed Fenrir to the guest chamber, where Goril slept with a
full belly (he’d just eaten Aaron).
Juliet worked fast to coax Goril into swallowing Aaron’s crystal, then hid as Fenrir came in with Jon, whom some of his werewolves had captured outside
of his cave. He woke Goril up and gave Jon
to him, and Goril immediately started eating him. Unfortunately, he stopped
when he caught Juliet’s scent and
quickly captured her. Aaron, having
retrieved his crystal, broke out of Goril’s stomach, though, and saved Juliet. Then, Jon
saved both of them with a fire spell
he used on Goril. The three of them then escaped Goril’s room and headed off to
Fenrir’s. Juliet planned to coax
Fenrir into swallowing Maurice’s
emerald and went in to do just that. However, Fenrir was awake, and his first
objective was to capture and eat the three escapees. So the chase was on with Juliet, Aaron,
and Jon being chased by Fenrir and
Goril.
Juliet got away and separated from the boys to find
Vivian, but not before slipping Aaron Maurice’s
Battler Emerald. She found Vivian
locked up in a room and set her free. They then escaped and made their way out
of the forest. But on their way to follow Aaron
and Jon, Vivian’s
water broke. Her baby was coming and she needed to go to the hospital at once.
So Juliet took her there right away.
From the hospital, Juliet called Deyon and Diahandra to help Aaron and Jon,
and then told them about Vivian. The
two Battlers delivered the news to their friends after just missing out on
their chance to help them deal with the Power Pair. The Battlers all came to
the hospital just in time to meet Maurice Eazel IV, Maurice
and Vivian’s son, and witnessed the
proud parents’ happy moment with their baby. Meanwhile, things ended on a
fairly good note with Aaron and Juliet as they both vowed to make William pay for selling Aaron
out to the Power Pair. Will they do that? Time will tell. . . .
Juliet turned up
only briefly in Book 45 to get Vivian and baby Maury (Maurice IV’s nickname)
out of the Battlers’ business regarding Chief Manhunter.
In Book 48, Juliet,
along with Vivian and all eight Battlers, were kidnapped by some of the
Battlers’ enemies, who were now in Chief Manhunter’s employ — Fenrir, Goril,
Maximole, and Carnivore. They were to be eaten by them at a special Christmas
Eve feast the chief was having. It was thanks to a clever plan of Deyon’s that
they all managed to escape, although Juliet almost suffered a terrible loss
when Aaron was killed by Goril after he bit him in the throat. Thanks to a
Phoenix Poinsettia he’d gotten from J.J., however, he was magically revived.
In Book 50, Juliet
joined the Battlers and new ally Stephanie
Sadler on an adventure up to the all-bird sky kingdom of Cloud Nine
to help its ruler, King
Peli Canos, stop the evil Vultura
Scavenge from destroying it. In the midst of the excitement, and Juliet was
kidnapped by Vultura, who critically injured her and threatened the Battlers
with her life. By tricking him easily, the Battlers were able to rescue Juliet,
and Richard defeated the sinister vulture.
Juliet appeared
briefly in Book 51, but her role was not that significant. She also appeared in
Super Battlers 5 long enough to deliver three UNITY aircrafts to the Battlers
for them to use to fly to the various locations at which some of the remaining
twenty-two Battler Crystals of Oriana’s had been hidden. Her last appearance in
that book was when she dropped Deyon and Maurice off in a Louisiana bayou. And in Book 52, she appeared
long enough to rescue Aaron from Goril’s clutches after being tipped off by Fenrir,
and then by William, that the evil gorilla had spent two days torturing him,
physically and mentally, by forcing him to see the painful memories of his past
while holding him prisoner in the same animal shelter she’d rescued him from in
Book 36. She nearly killed him in a vacant lot for all the torture he’d
subjected Aaron to, but Aaron convinced her not to. He ended up having to defeat
Goril himself with a Magic Advance.
