Character Summary
King Reptilius Crocous, aka “Stalker,” was first seen briefly in Book 18 when J.J. saw him spying on him, Manchomper, Steeltooth,
and Ace just seconds before Predator transported them off Gatora. He wasn’t
paid much mind, otherwise.
He turned up again
in Book 26 after using his magic to catch all the Battlers, along with J.J. and Aaron’s
parents, in a whirlpool and bringing them to his island kingdom, Crocoa. J.J. remembered that he’d seen him spying on him and
his archenemy, Manchomper, from behind a tree prior to his being returned to Canada. Stalker
took them all to his palace and let them meet his wife, Bitena. He explained
that his job was to protect the victims the Gatoran kings stalked for food,
that the whale-watching tour they’d been on before coming to Crocoa was a trick
to get them out in ocean, and then let them know why he was there — to request
their help in defeating King Reptilius Gatorus (aka “Predator”) and conquering
his kingdom, Gatora. But he said that J.J.
had to decide whether or not they’d help because he wanted him to lead
his Crocoan army.
When J.J. accepted, Stalker explained
that Crocoa had the advantage over Gatora — they had military weapons from
around the world that they’d brought from humans in disguise — until Predator
asked Liam DiCapa for help in defeating Crocoa. That
was what really encouraged J.J. to accept the job as the general of the
army, much to the chagrin of his parents.
Stalker later saved J.J. from his
younger brother, Chompus, who was going to beat him up after failing to eat
him. Then, he explained to Chompus that J.J.
was working with them.
After Predator was defeated, Stalker’s long-time nemesis escaped with his baby
son, Prince Fangorus, after his wife, Queen Scala, was killed
by J.J. But not all was bad for him. He got to hold his newborn son,
Gnawbin, soon after he hatched from his egg. Then, before returning the
Battlers home, he promised them that he’d always be around to help them
whenever they needed him. He even gave them magical coins that would transport
them to Crocoa and back whenever they flipped them.
The brand-new father
wasn’t seen again until Book 34, when J.J.
came to him for help in destroying Predator for good. Stalker offered him a
sample of a poison he’d been developing by mixing magic potions with negative
effects together. J.J. had an idea of
what to do with Fangorus after Predator was tricked into ingesting the poison
and was killed by it. J.J. handed the
now-orphaned baby Gatoran over to the Crocouses and they adopted him as their
own. Stalker now enjoys life with two healthy, happy sons, ignoring the fact
that Fangorus is the son of his now-dead archnemesis.
Stalker popped up again
in Book 42, when new White Battler Richard
Montgomery showed up in Big
Tooth Palace
having been rescued by Chompus from Predator’s demented brother, Scalorus
“Carnivore” Gatorus. He assured Richard
he was among friends, and that they learned about him from J.J. from one of his
visits after leaving the Battlers. After telling Richard about their war against
the Gatorans and that they’re allies of the Battlers, he magically sent Richard
home.
