Character Summary

Tunlen Molen’s story begins even before meeting the Black Crystal Battlers. He was once a normal, harmless mole who went through a mole’s boring, everyday routine. Until he and a bunch of other moles happened upon a pond that’d recently been hit with a blast of magical energy. After drinking from it, he and the other moles began developing magic powers, higher intelligence, and bigger bodies. However, one mole wasn’t happy with just the powers he’d gotten from one visit to the pond — Tunlen’s best friend, Maximole Diglon. In fact, he took several trips up to the pond and gained even more magic powers. With each trip, his body got bigger, his intelligence heightened, and predatory instincts developed. Tunlen, his clumsy little sister, Burra, and many other moles had to force Maximole out of their village of Moleville when he attempted to eat all of them.

 

Fast-forward to Book 43, when Maximole returns and attempts to make a meal out of the very moles who cast him away. Unable to do it on his own, Tunlen and a large number of moles located and kidnapped some of the Battlers — Silver Battler Maurice Eazel, Orange Battler Jay Dixon, Green Battler Aaron Rountree, and Red Battler Jon Crawley. They also took Aaron’s girlfriend, Juliet Kwarteng. They dragged them to Moleville and expressly asked for their help in defeating Maximole. They agreed to help just as Maximole attacked the village.

 

All four Battlers were defeated by Maximole, who was instead defeated (for the time being) by Juliet. Things got worse for Tunlen when Burra disappeared. She’d gone off with Jay to follow Maximole. Tunlen, Maurice, Aaron, Jon, and Juliet followed in Maurice’s Underground Fighter, showing up just after Jay had defeated Maximole. Maurice threatened to kill Maximole if he didn’t release Richard, leave, and stay away from Moleville. Tunlen urged his old friend to listen to him. Reluctantly, Maximole ran off into the tunnels, and that was that. With Maximole defeated and driven off and Moleville saved, Tunlen and Burra thanked the Battlers and Juliet and, after Burra had a little accident with some mud and worm cupcakes she’d prepared for their saviors, and sent them on their way in an elevator they’d created with their magic. After that, he returned to his job leading the now-safe moles of Moleville.
