Character Summary

When Dan Simmons first surfaced in Alexandria in Book 25, he approached Maurice Eazel, the Silver Battler, as a friend. He often popped up when Maurice least expected him and shared a few words with him. He claimed he was from a homeless shelter on Fort Belvoir, but when Maurice found out that the shelter was no longer running, Kesse Eazel, the Orange Battler, began to suspect Dan was stalking Maurice.

To throw suspicion off Dan, Maurice got the full story from him. Dan told him that a pack of werewolves attacked the homeless shelter he used to live in and kidnapped all the homeless people. The shelter was forced to close down for this reason. So Maurice stopped being suspicious of Dan. But he began to have his doubts when he saw a werewolf on his front walk wearing clothing similar to Dan’s. He put it out of his mind and tried to enjoy the Halloween dance the following night.

The dance was ruined that night when Dan showed up and revealed to Maurice one part of his story that he left out — all of the kidnapped homeless people were turned into werewolves, and he was one of them. Then, he kidnapped Maurice and his date, Vivian DiCapa, and took them to a cave in the forest, where his secret society of werewolves, the Clan of the Cave Wolves, lived. That’s where he found out that Dan was ordered by his superior, Fenrir Lupus, to stalk Maurice and kidnap him the night of Halloween so that he could be used for the Supper of the Werewolves — and Vivian, too.

Later, when Fenrir tried to devour Maurice after the other Battlers rescued him, but got caught helping Vivian escape, too, Fenrir discovered Maurice’s true identity and tried to eat him on the spot. Dan felt he had to protect him, so he did. However, Fenrir brandished an elephant gun loaded with silver bullets. He shot Dan clean in the head, blowing most of it away. With a heavy loss of blood, Dan fell to the ground and died.
