Character Summary

Ursa Infernus is a mutant bear who appeared in the last two adventures of Book 23. He attacked a bus Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, Jamal, and Felicia were riding to get to Chicago. When the teens got off to fight him, he put them all to sleep with a Somnilight spell and kidnapped them. He promised to let them go if they let him learn a spell Shauna had put in her Cinder Orb (which she’d won from the Richmond Magic Battle Arena) so that he could use it to destroy Richmond. When Shauna refused, he battled, defeated, and, finally, devoured her. But Jamal beat him with his water magic, which proved to be very potent against him (he used fire magic, and fire magic users are weak against water magic). After he cut Shauna out of Infernus’s stomach, and he magically healed it, a deal was made to let them go and leave the spell alone, which he agreed to, but he warned them that they’d meet them again, as well as that he’d be especially after Diahandra.

Three months later, Infernus and his cohort, Teddy Volcanis, popped up in Chicago and attacked the MBA there. They tied up all the magic users and took Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, Jamal, Felicia, and Blair Windsor, the Magic Team Captain, hostage. They then hung Shauna and Diahandra over a huge pit of lava they magically created and nearly dropped them in. However, Felicia escaped and battled them. She defeated them with a Volcanic Eruption Spell and sent them barreling through the sky.

In Book 31, Infernus and Volcanis, along with the Sabre Brothers, kidnapped Shauna and Diahandra and took them to their secret hiding place in the woods to eat them. They revealed that they’d met and made friends and decided to join forces to finally defeat Shauna and Diahandra. Their plans were nearly foiled when Derrick, Jamal, and Felicia showed up to rescue them and blew Striker, Killer, and Volcanis away, but Infernus managed to take Derrick and Felicia prisoner with a Seizing Spheres spell he learned at a villain’s convention in Chicago. (He kidnapped Shauna and Diahandra this way, too.) Jamal managed to defeat him, though, and freed his friends. So all four villains were left high and dry.

Infernus and Volcanis returned in Super Battlers 3, when they took part in Bin Dare’s tournament on Dare Island. They would get the opportunity to eat Diahandra if they could defeat her in a fair battle. They got their chance when they found her and Orange Battler Kesse Eazel alone on a mountain. Although the combined strength of the duo’s fire magic managed to overcome Diahandra’s forest magic, it was no match for Kesse’s mountain magic. They were defeated easily with such mountain-type attacks as Mudslide, Rockslide, and Rock Cannon. So their defeat allowed Diahandra and Kesse to go free.

Infernus and Volcanis appeared again briefly in Book 39, soon after Shauna, Diahandra, Derrick, Jamal, and Felicia arrived back home in Virginia. As usual, their objective was to eat them. But with one attack from each teen, they were defeated very quickly. So once again, the two bears were out of luck.

Infernus and Volcanis made their final appearance in Super Battlers 5. After being tipped off by an anonymous source that Diahandra would be climbing the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with new Orange Battler Jay Dixon, they quickly set off to attack them there. They started off their latest attempts to kill Diahandra by using a giant fireball to shoot down the UNITY aircraft she was flying in with Jay. It fell to the ground and crash, but it was all thanks to the two teens transforming into their Battler forms that they survived. So the two bears next lured them up to a mountain cave by sending a huge stream of fire after them. Once in the cave, the two bears revealed themselves and challenged Diahandra to one last battle against them. If they won, not only would they go free, but they’d get something they were searching for — five Battler Crystals hidden in the Rocky Mountains. They’d found them just before they’d arrived.

The battle began with Diahandra fighting Infernus and Jay fighting Volcanis. Infernus had Diahandra on the ropes, at first, hitting her with any and every new fire spell he’d learned since their previous encounter in Book 39. He even revealed that he could now fly! He chased Diahandra, who tried using her Battler Jetting ability to escape him, but he stayed pretty close behind her, using a Lava Beam spell to fill up a deep ditch with hot molten during the chase. His only hindrance was his inexperience with flying. While Diahandra could easily make sharp turns in the air, Infernus found it difficult to do so. Diahandra noticed this and used it to her advantage. She got him to chase her down toward the ground, timed herself right, and performed a risky U-turn just as she was about to plunge straight down into the lava. Infernus, unable to turn quickly, ended up making an unintentional dive into the lava, dying instantly. So that was the end of Ursa Infernus.

Infernus was one of Diahandra’s two ultimate enemies. His fire magic made him a very tough opponent — especially since Diahandra just uses forest magic.
